Alpine Dispatches? Tell Me More…

Welcome to my weekly blog and newsletter (blogletter?), I look forward to head out on this journey together!

If you’re pressed for time and only want the short version:

TL;DR (Too Long, Didn’t Read)

This weekly (sometimes more, sometimes less 🤷🏼‍♂️) publication is my photographic blog and newsletter rolled into one, it is where I share my love of photography, all it l allows me to experience, and everything in between .

Still here?

Splendid.

As alluded to above, this will be the online home for my love affair with photography.

Aiming to be in your inbox 📬 once a week (sometimes more, sometimes less 🤷🏼‍♂️). But always 👉🏽 Sharing the Visual Stoke 🙌🏽📸!

I hope to share:

  • Image/s and photographic essays (both commercial and personal).

  • Editing and photographic insights, techniques and tips (be afraid…)

  • Forgotten photo projects that never saw the light of day.

  • Thoughts on said projects, above.

  • Commentary on photography (and related topics).

  • Philosophical takes on image making (and perhaps life, who knows…).

  • Interesting industry related news and finds.

  • Outdoor adventures such trail runs, ski tours, bike rides, hikes (we live in the Swiss Alps, after all), but always with a photographic viewpoint (whether it be sharing the images from the adventure / how it was photographed / etc.).

In essence, the overarching topic / aspect binding everything on this blogletter (it’s growing on me, ok?) together will be photography, sometimes as the driving force of a post, sometimes as a compliment to the main narrative.

Things may evolve.

They may not.

I’m just taking it one step at a time.

What I am sure about, is that I have this desire to share the beautiful moments - happening every second all around us - whether it be the fleeting light on a landscape, someone’s expression or people enjoying being active outdoors, with you, through photography.

Why “Alpine Dispatches”?

Glad you asked.

You see, we (me, my wife and our son) live in a small little village tucked away in a corner of the upper Simmental Valley. In the Berner Oberland Region of Kanton Bern, Switzerland.

In other words: in the The Swiss Alps 🏔️🇨🇭🫕.

Here we ride bikes, visit lakes and mountain peaks, ski, hike, trail run or just spend time at home.

And this is what I like to share (among the things mentioned before).

Who is behind Alpine Dispatches?

Hey, I'm Cornelius 👋🏽

A South African landscape and lifestyle photographer based in Switzerland.

I have enjoyed making images since the film era (Nikon SLR's and Fujifilm stock 🥰), although now I use DSLR's / Mirrorless.

Having grown up at the beach (🇿🇦), and now living in the mountains (🇨🇭), adventuring outside has always been a part of me. So I enjoy combining the two and sharing it by making images 📸.

Joy shared is joy doubled, right?

Back in the film 🎞️ days we would get together with prints and discuss / critique, have exhibitions, etc. to share our work and so people could buy prints.

Things have changed a bit since that time!

Now we do it all (mostly) online 🌐.

At least I do since between family (kids, anyone?!) and work there is little time for much else, like get togethers with other photographers 😬.

But I still love ❤️ to get outside 🏔️ , I still love to make images 📸, and I still love to share 🙌🏽 them.

“And that is what this blog / newsletter is all about: sharing the visual stoke of making images, the things it allows us to experience and explore, all while enjoying the process”.
