The World's Best Recovery Drink, When to Take It, And The Ultimate Life Hack - EVER.
Whether you've been out on a photography adventure, ski toured for days or ran a 100 miles, this drink will set you straight. Also, I share the only life hack you'll ever need.
There’s always some new scientifically advanced form of recovery drink.
And it will supposedly help you recover better after a monumental physical effort.
Can I tell you a secret?
It’s all bullshit.
It reminds me of all the on- and off-line gurus promising you the world with their secret new life hack.
Don’t fall for it.
I’ll give you the ultimate life hack right here, right now, for free:
DO. THE. WORK.
No special morning routine or meditation.
Wake up.
Work.
Repeat.
(That’ll be $1499, please)
Top Class Recovery Drink
If you do endurance sport (cycling, trail running, ski touring, etc.), you’ll be familiar with the concept of the “recovery drink”.
They supposedly:
replenish vital fluids
promote muscle recovery
reduce muscle soreness
And it has become a very lucrative industry.
All bullshit, in my humble opinion.
As someone who has raced mountain bike events like the Cape Epic and Cape Pioneer Trek at the highest level, along with completing trail running events such as the Sky Run, I have experimented with my fair share of proprietary mixes.
Yet, when it comes down to it, you know what works best?
Beer (mixed with panache or sprite / lemonade, when available).
Why does it work so well?
The main reason: it’s not full of crap like the proprietary stuff, and it’s been around for a long time.
Simply put:
It relaxes the muscles and the mind post workout, as well as providing some great calories for recovery.
But don’t go and have more than one serving, now, you’ll regret it!
Bonus Tip:
Whereas this beer mixture of a recovery drink helps immediately post workout, which is usually in the afternoon, follow up with a glass of red wine in the evening for best results.
Inspiration
Speaking about the ultra running I’ve done in the past reminded me of this YouTube channel I started following a while back, called Border Lands.
It’s about the joys and challenges of trail running.
One of the guys, in particular, has DNF’d (did not finish) 8 of his 9 trail running 100 miler attempts.
Yet he keeps going back.
(I should maybe send him this newsletter about the recovery drink…)
Anyway, it’s beautifully filmed and told.
