Skiing Under the Stars (And the Busyness of Life)
Thoughts on how existing can sometimes be a fine line between chaos and beautiful harmony.
We just got back from holiday in South Africa, visiting my folks and some of our friends.
The journey there was long, consisting of train rides, walking, arriving at the airport, flights being cancelled, flights going again, and finally arriving.
Some chaos.
It was (still is) Summer there.
We had an amazing time with warm weather, beach days, date nights (my folks looked after our son) and I got to surf again (more on our holiday in a future newsletter).
Beautiful harmony.
Our journey home was fortunately a bit smoother on the flying side (only a slight delay).
But we arrived back home at midday, threw down our bags, had lunch with my wife’s parents, then straight into an evening event for our son’s kindergarten, and finally in bed, before starting work the next morning.
Some chaos.
Here, where we live (Swiss Alps), it is going into Winter. And we’ve just had a little over a week of great early season snowfall.
Ski touring is my big love in winter.
But work wise we are going into the busy season.
Which is why, when there was a small weather window earlier this week, I got up at 3:30am to do a ski tour under the stars before work.
Fortunately we have a few good ski touring options in the mountains surrounding our little village.
I was back home just after 7am, and at work by 8am.
Beautiful harmony.
But this got me thinking on how, between the things we like to do, the things we have to do and the things that pop up and throw us a curve ball every now and then (but still need doing), life sometimes really treads a fine line between chaos and harmony.
Which is why, in those moments when it tends towards the latter, I try to really be thankful and appreciate it.

Travelling the other side of the world is no easy feat and certainly not with a family, to visit family. I have done it all my life (albeit without kids). It’s a massive undertaking. But finding peace in a skin track not too far from home is like a dream scenario. Its sounds like you went to both ends of the spectrum in the last few weeks. For me, it allows you to make space between yourself and the hustle/bustle. But also make space mentally. Recharging the mental batteries. I hope it felt like a blessed moment topping out on that peak before you transition and find flow in the turns.
It’s summer here in Australia and all I want to do skin track a peaceful peak at 3am.
Great story and great image. Cheers,
Tyson
