DJI (Yes, That DJI) Drops Awesome New E-Bike System
From photography to video, we all know about DJI's drones, microphones, action cameras, etc. - but do you know they've now entered the e-bike arena?
Wait, how does an e-bike system tie into photography, the outdoors and life in the Swiss Alps?!
Great question!
And I’ll tell you how (hold my beer):
I think we can all agree that if you’re into photography and/or video, you’re familiar with DJI?
The maker of drones, gimbals, action cameras and wireless microphone systems.
Yes, that DJI.
I have used many of their products over the years to capture images and tell stories.
Using their DJI Mic on the podcast regularly, in fact.
So, that’s how this ties into the image making side of things.
Well, they have just come out with an innovative e-bike system that has breathed new life into bit of an unexciting market at the moment.
Unexpected?
Maybe.
Unrealistic?
Not in the slightest.
Quite brilliant, in my opinion, actually.
You see, they already make the batteries and motors, as well as the software to manage it and for them to talk together (drones, anyone?).
All they needed to do was upscale it to e-bike size.
And that they did, quite splendidly:
Smaller, stronger motor
Top tube touch screen display
Bigger capacity, lighter and yet smaller battery
Awesome mobile app and feature management
Additionally they established a separate e-bike brand, called Amflow, to keep pushing the boundaries.
Check out the video below from Rob Rides E-MTB for quick overview:
Here in Switzerland where we live, e-bikes are a big part of everyday life.
People use them to commute, but also to go biking on trails.
Life in the Swiss Alps.
If you’re fit, you can ride so much more in one day with an e-bike than with a normal bike (but don’t get lazy!).
I have used e-bikes to head out on photo making adventures, too.
Or just to explore further and quicker than I would be able to with my normal bike (scouting).
So, that’s how this ties into the adventure side of things.
Now, we have a lightweight e-bike that handles more like a normal mountain bike.
Yes, it’s been done before (Specialized Levo SL, Orbea Rise, Mondraker Neat, etc.)
What makes this different?
The DJI drive system - and innovative integration of the tech they already use for their other products - into a progressive e-bike.
Quite unlike anything currently available.
Very refreshing, in my opinion!
That’s it for this week!
Something a little different than usual, admittedly, but I thought it a cool and interesting development that’s worth sharing with you.
