What Motivates You?
Finding motivation to pursue the things that bring us joy can be hard sometimes, given everyday responsibilities, but it's vitally important to keep going.

Life can be a hard sometimes.
What that “hard” means can be completely different for different people and different circumstances.
Raising children.
Tough job.
No job.
Sleeping under a tree.
Or a three star hotel instead of a five star one.
Whatever.
That’s not the point.
The point is that between everything that’s going on, we need to find the motivation to do the (or some of the) things that bring us joy.
That fulfills us.
In my case, in winter, it’s getting out for ski touring between work and family life.
Is it easy?
Not always.
Mostly not, actually.
More often than not, I end up going at night, or super early in the morning to be back by late morning. When the stars align (and thanks to the wife’s support), I manage to go during the daytime like normal people.
And that got me thinking about motivation.
Why do I do it?
For me, first and foremost, it’s the love of ski touring. Moving through the mountains under my own power, navigating terrain based on experience and knowledge gained over time, which determines both your survival and fun factor.
It’s a spiritual experience.
But it’s not always easy, and I still need motivation to get out there.
Is it always worth it afterwards?
You bet it is.
Take the opening image, for example.
After a full day’s work, I got home, had a quick dinner and a glass of wine with the family, then prepared my things to head out. I questioned myself a few times as I was going throught the motions (it’s dark, it’s cold, the couch and another glass of wine with the missus would be nicer).
But I just kept on preparing and then headed out.
Once I got going the exhiliration of the outdoors took over and I found that familiar energy to keep on going.
Once at the peak, before skiing down, I took the aforementioned image, then I lay down on my back in the snow and stared at the starry sky.
All alone on the mountain top.
It was a special feeling.
And that’s (part of) what motivates me to get out the next time again.

Often, when we start on something that we would like to do, things can seem not ideal (see images above).
But of we just keep that vision of what things could, or will, be in mind it can mean the difference between success and failure.
Which is a long winded of saying that whatever motivates you, hold onto it!
It’s important.
Things may not seem ideal.
Just go through the motions and start.
Whether it is ski touring, going for a bike ride, making a run, baking a cake or writing your next article / blog post.
Find that motivation and do it.

That’s it for this time, I hope you have a kickass week ahead.
