The Story Behind The Image: “Endless Horizons”.
How the simple act of taking my camera along for the ride (literally) allowed me to make this image when the opportunity presented itself - very unexpectedly.
Side Note: Even though images are all around us, we rarely delve deeper into how an image came to be. As such, in this series, I share the stories behind some of my images. You can read the complete (growing) series here.
While we are waiting for the snow conditions to improve here in the Swiss Alps, let me tell you about how the above image came to be.
And it’s quite fitting to the current climate, being a more warm weather image.
Picture it (pun intended):
Cape Town, South Africa.
City center.
Business meeting.
Drove in from Stellenbosch.
Not a fan of cities.
Already planning my route back home (in my head) to be a bit of a reward as the meeting is ending.
Don’t tell anyone, but there’s this little road between Muizenberg and Stellenbosch (where we were living at the time) that literally runs on the beach.
A detour to get home, but I’ll avoid traffic and get to check surf conditions, as well as look at the ocean during the drive.
Better than being stuck in traffic on the highway.
I don’t know why, but I threw my camera with a zoom lens (quite, you prime lens purists), on the passenger seat when I left home, just in case.
Sometimes the universe just knows, I swear.
So, as I’m driving back along the coast, lost in my own thoughts and glad to be missing traffic, I look to my right.
What do I see?
A lone yacht making its way across the ocean under the clouds from a clearing squall, and just then a rainbow briefly makes an appearance too.
What are the chances?
Beautiful scene.
Camera along for the ride, by chance.
The universe, I’m telling you.
No perfect parking spot though, as I piss off a motorist or two trying to get off the road immediately to make the image I see in my head.
C'est la vie.
Anyway, I manage a frame or two before the moment is gone (thanks to the zoom lens I could frame in tight).
Stoked to have witnessed it.
So stoked, in fact, that it’s now available as a limited edition print in my print store, here.
What did I learn (once more)?
Always take the camera along for the ride, you never know.
And take the scenic route.
It’s always worth it, image opportunities or not.
That’s it for this week, hope you enjoyed a little insight into the story behind the image.
