Springtime in the Upper Simmental Valley.
With soaring temperatures over the last week here in the Swiss Alps, we've reached that time of year where morning and afternoon activities can be very different.
Ski touring in the early morning at higher altitudes, followed by barbecuing in shorts with family and friends in the afternoon down in the valley.
Ah, spring in the Swiss Alps.
It’s been a warm week or two, and I’ve been watching the snow visibly melt away (while staring out the window at work).
Even at higher altitudes.
A concerning occurrence for someone like myself who is struggling to let go of their winter activities.
However…
If you keep your finger on the pulse of current conditions, mix in some local knowledge, get permission from the boss - I mean the (lovely) wife :) - and find some willing friends, you can still find some worth while ski touring.
Where we live, to be clear.
At even higher altitudes - and higher latitudes - I’m sure things are different (most likely still good ski touring wise).
Anyway, what I was trying to say is this:
Never mind the difference between summer and winter, in the spring time here in the upper Simmental valley where we live, you can experience those differences in a single day.
Like today.
In the morning, I was fortunate to head out on an early (4:30am) ski tour with friends, and even though we abandoned our original objective (snow and weather conditions) for another one, we still had a great time adventuring in the mountains with our skis.
Back at home by 10:30am.
Quick change of clothes and a wipe of the face with a wet cloth.
Then, in the afternoon, we had a barbecue with friends at a local little lake and play park, with all our kids running around in shorts and t-shirts, myself and the other dads sweating profusely in front of the fires in the sun.
Good times.
Why am I telling you this?
Well, I like to share the awesomeness of where we live with people.
To boast?
Not at all!
Mostly to inspire you to visit the region, it really is well worth it.
I can’t help it.
But, don’t expect the vibe from famous Swiss destinations here.
Rather, expect a laid back mountain atmosphere with locals going about their business.
And with an unlimited amount of outdoor activities on your doorstep.
Right, that’s it, I hope you have a great week!
