On a recent family holiday to Italy, I caught myself thinking about how sailing might be the ultimate freedom.
Especially on the Mediterranean.
Relatively calm seas, diverse ports to call on, or just anchor in a small bay somewhere.
Idyllic.
But it’s not without it’s challenges, sailing.
Small living quarters, cabin fever, etc.
(I speak as someone who has spent weeks and months at sea on sailing boats)
On the other side though, you have the best of both worlds.
When at anchor, you are free to explore the terrestrial side of life e.g. the towns and villages where you find yourself.
Italy?
Salami, wine, focaccia.
Greece?
Olives, tsatsiki, ouzo.
West Africa?
Well, something all together different, I’m not going to lie.
And when you feel like a change of scenery, or people are getting on your nerves?
Simply pull up anchor and head off towards the horizon.
It’s not for everyone, though, as perfect as it sounds.
For those of us who have experienced it?
Well, let’s just say it is as close to the ulitmate freedom as it gets.
And let’s not forget the image making opportunities - not bad at all!
That’s it for this week!
